Dent @ Home with Matt Shobe: “Yes, and…” The Power of Improvisation
June 26 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm PDT
Denter Matt Shobe is a man of many hats. He’s a product design expert, a serial entrepreneur, an investor, a distance runner, a private pilot, a skier, and a dad. His current professional role is that of “Rogue Leader” at Rebellion Defense, a firm that wants to “change how the US and our allies build software to save lives and safeguard democracy.” Prior to that, he was Chief UX Officer of Mighty AI, a Venture Hacker at AngelList, and the co-founder and Chief Design Officer at FeedBurner, a web feed management platform (acquired by Google in 2007).
Matt clearly has an adaptive personality and he admires improvisational talents. One of his favorite bits of advice is: “Take an improv class. Its performance anxiety-conquering, spot problem-solving tactics mark one of the easiest risk/reward bets you’ll ever make on your own potential as a professional.”
In the world of improv, “Yes and,” is foundational to one’s development as a performer. As Wikipedia says: “Yes, and…” thinking is a rule-of-thumb in improvisational comedy that suggests that a participant should accept what another participant has stated (“yes”) and then expand on that line of thinking. It is also used in business and other organizations as a principle that improves the effectiveness of the brainstorming process, fosters effective communication, and encourages the free sharing of ideas.”
In this Dent @ Home Zoom talk, Matt will provide concrete examples of “Yes, and…” at work in the professional world, and will talk about how he’s developed his improvisational skills, and how you doing the same will help you in all of the many domains of life.
