Quarterly Books & Inspiration

Denter book club session at Dent:Explore Maui 2018

Each quarter we’ll provide a digital copy of a thoughtfully selected title intended to push your thinking forward.

Books have a strong heritage at Dent. For the last six years we have built “The Dent Library” through the recommendations of our members and conference attendees — books that we have on hand and bring to the conference each year for people to handle, read, and eventually purchase while at Dent. The quarterly book club is a natural extension of the Dent Library tradition.

Here is a sample of a few of the past titles we’ve enjoyed…

The Culture Code

We are on the front end of a big perspective shift about how we look at culture inside organizations. Over the coming few years, company leaders are going to start to see how psychological safety, belonging, ownership, and commitment from their teams are critical to the success of their products and the perception of their brands.

The book you have in your hands is one of the first indications of this shift. Daniel Coyle has done a wonderful job of arranging the evidence into a compelling argument: we are massively sensitive to our context, and that context has a profound effect on the quality of work we are able to do.

Mindset

The concept of fixed and growth mindsets is deceptively simple and incredibly powerful. And having a growth mindset is so thoroughly tied to the spirit of Dent because it underlies one of our most basic assumptions as a community: that with learning and practice we can improve our performance at even the softest skills.

After reading this book I am convinced that a person’s mindset, more than almost anything else, drives how much of a dent they are able to make in the universe.

How to Fly a Horse

How to Fly a Horse has changed the way I think about creativity and invention forever. It is full of fascinating research and examples that lead you to conclude, inevitably, that creative thinking is just thinking, and that a little persistence when attacking an unusual problem will go a very long way.

I hope that you find the stories, practical techniques, and examples in this book as convincing and enjoyable as I do.
