Arguing With the Mirror: Why Deborah Berebichez Says AI Is Built to Agree With You
Deborah Berebichez; physicist, data scientist, TV host, educator and entrepreneur
A preview of Dr. Deborah Berebichez's talk and hands-on workshop at Dent 2026 — September 13–15, La Fonda on the Plaza, Santa Fe.
What if the most dangerous thing about AI isn't that it fails — it's that it's designed to agree with you?
The AI tools most of us use every day are optimized for our approval, not for accuracy. Most people haven't reckoned with that yet. Dr. Deborah Berebichez has.
The physicist who reads AI as a mirror
She grew up in Mexico City, where she was told to hide her love of math so she wouldn't "intimidate boys." She went on to become the first Mexican woman to earn a physics Ph.D. from Stanford, studying under two Nobel laureates. Over the two decades since, she's built AI and data products for major institutions, and today she leads enterprise AI deployments for EY, one of the world's largest professional services firms.
Along the way she landed on an insight that both the champions and the critics of AI tend to miss:
AI is not a thinking machine. It is a mirror.
The talk: “Arguing With the Mirror”
In her Dent 2026 main-stage talk, Deborah explores how AI systems are trained to reflect your preferences back at you — optimized for agreement rather than truth. Drawing on her own story of resilience, including failing her qualifying exam at Stanford and the mentor who refused to let her quit, she makes the case that the most important skill in the AI era is learning to challenge these systems rather than defer to them.
You'll leave knowing how to push back.
The workshop: “Build Your First AI Agent”
Her contribution goes beyond the main stage. On Sunday, September 13, Deborah leads a hands-on workshop — the same session she recently delivered to a room of Latin American CEOs.
When: Sunday, September 13 · 90 minutes
Who it's for: the AI-curious professional who has used chatbots but built nothing autonomous
Prerequisites: none — no coding experience required
Bring: a laptop and a Claude or ChatGPT account
